The Smith Company is a high-tech manufacturing and service company. The President is planning to retire in two years. His current EVP is slated to succeed him as President when he retires.
The EVP manages four Directors, none of whom are appropriate candidates for promotion. While they have been successful in their positions, they have required careful oversight by the EVP and lacked th capacity for independence required someone assuming the role of EVP. The President decided to look outside the company for someone who could eventually assume the position of EVP.
